This is particularly true for mothers, who have many caregiving responsibilities, but moms certainly dont have a monopoly on letting life get in the way of taking care of themselves.  And while it’s hard to prioritize something like taking a bath when you have so many other items on your to-do list, self-care is an important aspect of stress management. How Self Care Benefits You We are all less able to handle the stresses that come our way when were already depleted by physical and emotional exhaustion.  Or, put in a more positive way, we are more resilient and more able to handle lifes stress when we are feeling our best both physically and emotionally.  A massage, soak in the tub or other forms of pampering revitalize you inside and out. Taking time out to maintain self-care has several benefits: It Affects Your Physical Health While self-pampering doesn’t always lead to major improvements in overall health the way healthy diet and exercise do, the relaxation you get from it can trigger the relaxation response, which can prevent chronic stress from damaging your health, so in a sense, self-care is good for you inside and out. It Affects Your Emotional Health Taking time out to care for yourself can remind you and others that you and your needs are important, too. Having a well-cared-for body can make you feel good about yourself and your life, and conveys to others that you value yourself. This can contribute to long-term feelings of wellbeing. It Makes You a Better Caregiver People who neglect their own needs and forget to nurture themselves are at danger of deeper levels of unhappiness, low self-esteem, and feelings of resentment. Also, sometimes people who spend their time only taking care of others can be at risk of getting burned out on all the giving, which makes it more difficult to care for others or themselves. Taking time to care for yourself regularly can make you a better caretaker for others. The Importance of Self-Care There are several different ways to focus on self-care, many of which involve making time to get enough sleep, prioritizing healthy meals, ensuring a balance of leisure time in your schedule, and making time for friends. A simple but often overlooked form of self-care is having a self-pampering experience on a regular basis in your own home. Taking a few hours for a ?spa experience and some much-deserved self-care is also an effective way to manage stress for the following reasons: It Gives You a Break from Stress Taking a break amidst a tub of warm bubbles or under the warm hands of an experienced masseuse can help you feel like you’re escaping a stressful reality and taking a mental and emotional vacation. As previously mentioned, it triggers the relaxation response  and allows you to come back to the reality of your life feeling refreshed and relaxed. It Gives You Time Alone While different people have varying degrees of introversion and extroversion, having some time alone is important for most people’s functioning. When you’re relaxing by yourself, it’s much easier to slip into a state of quiet meditation, enjoy some self-reflection, or let your problems work themselves out in the back of your mind, without taking all of your focused concentration. It Offers Soothing Feelings Giving your body some special treatment is a natural way to relieve stress. Other than keeping your skin soft and your body in good repair, spa-related activities like massage and warm baths have been known to soothe even small colicky babies like nothing else. Such activities continue to be effective tools for relaxation as we get older, but we sometimes forget to utilize them. Self-Care Strategies That Work Once you’ve decided it’s time to start nurturing yourself and your body, be sure to block off some time for this.  Try to schedule a block where you won’t be interrupted. You need only to have a bathroom to give yourself a home-spa experience; you can put on some soothing music, and try some or all of the following self-care strategies. Take a Bath: Get out the bubbles, oils, and scented soaps, and soak until you’re wrinkled.Deep-Condition Your Hair: While you’re in the tub, put on a deep-conditioning treatment for your hair, and let it work as you relax.Deep-Clean Your Pores: With a nice clay masque, you can draw impurities out of your skin and stress out of your system.Care For Your Feet: After you soak your feet to soften calloused skin, use a pumice stone to slough off dead skin, and finish with rich foot cream, and perhaps polish.Nourish Your Skin: Rich, luxurious creams smell wonderful and feel smooth, especially if you exfoliate your skin in the tub before putting them on.Tend to Your Nails: Correct the beating your nails probably take from your busy life (especially for those of you who bite your nails!) by filing and buffing. A coat of polish can make you feel like a princess for days afterward. (This is probably more for my female readers.)Get a Massage: This one can be especially nice. If your budge t doesn’t allow for regular massages with a professional, see if you can trade with a friend or your spouse, or use an electronic massager. In addition to pampering yourself, more substantial forms of self-care involving healthy lifestyle choices are important, too. Consuming a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and being sure you get enough sleep are all important for long-term health and stress management as well.

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos Black Abolitionist Arguments...

In the mid-1800s the issue of slavery had emerged in the U.S. as a major conflict. In the northern states a small but very articulate group of abolitionists formed to speak out against the abomination of slavery. Several of the most influential and outspoken abolitionists were actually former slaves. Three such speakers during that time were Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Jacobs. All born into slavery, and having witnessed its horrors first-hand, these three black reformers publicly took a stand against the atrocity of enslaving fellow human beings. They argued for their rights as men and women. However, they each went about their arguments using different modes of persuasion. While the main message of each abolitionist†¦show more content†¦Since Jacobs knew many of her readers would consider her account exaggerated or fictitious, she included the testimonials of two white female abolitionists and one black antislavery writer to confirm that the recorded e vents were true. These slave narratives were powerful in the abolitionists’ effort to spread their antislavery cause. As long as people remained ignorant about the realities of slavery, they were not motivated to action, but stories like Jacobs’ showed the need for reform. â€Å"Pity me, and pardon me, O virtuous reader! You never knew what it is to be a slave; to be entirely unprotected by law or custom†¦entirely subject to the will of another.† Jacobs’ story conveyed pathos, or emotional appeal, as she spoke directly to her readers several times throughout the narrative. Her language choice affected the audiences emotional response, especially when they became aware that she was telling the truth. Jacobs was willing to share her personal, and in some ways shameful, past for the greater good. She wanted her readers to understand the perils of enslavement, and try to relate to what it feels like to be owned by another human being. Only then could they sympathize with the antislavery movement. Reactions of the children were mixed for both videos. There seem too be a common theme of disappointment during the beginning half of the videos. Some of the reactions in the old cameras video were, â€Å"why things had to be so hard back then†, â€Å" I hope there is a YouTube tutorial on this† and â€Å" Who knew taking a picture was so much work†. They were all speechless, banging their heads and had big eyes. One girl admits that it is sad that the albums on our phones are named after the physical albums people use to have with physical photos. The biggest shock cam when they were told that they did not take any pictures and that after taking the picture you cant immediate see it unless you went to the store to develop it. In the VCR video the first question had the kids all confused, â€Å" What is this?† The kids responded with â€Å"DVD player† and â€Å" you put in tape and it will play music right?† Some other unusual responses were , it’s a CD player, alarm clock and even radio was said. The questions in both videos were very similar because both videos started of by asking the children what the item was and did they ever see it before. Then the questions asked were about the functions of the device and how to make it work. As the interview progressed the questions became more realistic and the child then realizes how the item connects to society today and how different things work now. What kid needs Botox for wrinkles? And do these parents do whatever their children ask for? She also admitted that she was actually encouraged by other stage mothers and they do it to their children. 3. The Botox procedure is done by the mother herself; she is not even a doctor? When they asked little Britney if Botox hurt she said â€Å" yes but its less than getting her legs waxed† Transition: Is it really for their children? Why are these parents taking it so far? Third main point: 1. Of course all these pageant moms say they are doing this for their kid, but teaching their kids to being superficial and fake is not the right way. They want their kid to win, they make it important for their kids to win and these young kids are being pressure to win â€Å"beauty† contest. The parents usually say it makes their daughter feels beautiful, confidences and get use to pressure, what if they lose? What does that do to the kid? 2. These kids are not ready for those things; they need to learn those slowly. Growing up too fast is bad for them and giving them a mental picture that beauty is everything. Conclusion : Which brings me back to my first main point: that we should be teaching our kids to have fun and tell them how education is important and outside beauty is important. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling. / New York: P. F. Collier Son, 1917; Character Tom Jones, Fieldings imperfect and mortal hero, is the character through whom Fielding gives voice to his philosophy of Virtue. In contrast to the moral philosophizing of many of Fieldings contemporaries, Fielding does not suggest that Toms affairs with Molly Seagrim, Mrs. Waters, and Lady Bellaston should reflect badly on his character. Rather, keeping with the Romantic genre, Fielding seems to admire Toms adherence to the principles of Gallantry, which require that a man return the interest of a woman. Interestingly, all of Toms love affairs, including his relationship with Sophia, his true love, are initiated by the woman in question, which is Fieldings way of excusing Tom from the charge of lustful depravity. Moreover, the fact that Toms lovers include a feisty, unfeminine wench and two middle-aged women suggest that his motives are various. Tom also treats women with the utmost respect, obliging their desire to be courted by pretending to be the seducer even when they are seducing him. Tom refuses to abandon Molly for Sophia and is plagued by his obligations to Lady Bellaston. Nonetheless, Toms refusal of the tempting marriage proposal of Arabella Hunt—whose last name underscores the fact that Tom is hunted more often than he is the hunter—indicates that he has mended his wild ways and is ready to become Sophias husband. Toms gallantry reveals itself in his relationships with men as well as women, however. This spirit is evident in Toms insistence on paying the drinking bill for the army men at Bristol, and in his gallant defense of himself in the duel. I am convinced, my child, that you have much goodness, generosity and honour in your temper; if you will add prudence and religion to these, you must be happy: for the three former qualities, I admit, make you worthy of happiness, but they are the latter only which will put you in possession of it. Allworthy, Page 228O Blifil: Bifil is the complete opposite of Jones’s character. By no means does Blifil think of someone else’s welfare. He is always thinking what can he gain from a situation. He is obsessed with the future; all of his actions are based on eventually getting the most amount of Allworthy’s estate. By the end of the novel Blifil unlike Jones did not learn anything to the contrary all he did was corrupt his values to an even futher extent. Squire Allworthy: Allworthy is supposed to be correct all the time hence his last name but his actions as the novel progresses questions his decision making process and his better judgment of what is right and what is wrong. He makes his conclusions on Jones’s actions not by reasoning and analyzing the situation at hand but instead makes his decisions following what he understands what is right and wrong. Allworthy at the end of the novel dmits that his decisions to reason the way he did and judge Jones the way he did were wrong. Sophia: Sophia is the essence of womanhood in the novel. She is very honest and obedient in the novel but she also has a sense of independence towards her father’s wishes. After she and Tom are lovers and Tom is extradited from the town Sophia is willing to go against her father’s order to stay an d marry Blifil and she leaves the town to go and find Jones. Although Sophia is very honest and loving she does not think like Jones. She is not dedicated like Jones. She puts her personal interest before the welfare of others. Squire Western: Western like Tom is a very energetic and lively character. He does not analyze things too much just simply does what he feels like doing. It seems as if Western enjoys every moment because of his friendly and jovial attitude. Western though is also a very closed and stubborn man, once he believes in one idea there is no one who can change his mind. We have got the dog fox, I warrant the bitch is not far off. Squire Western, Page 491 The hunting metaphor reveals the extent to which Squire Western is preoccupied with his country pursuits. Though his quest to find his daughter is ostensibly his top priority he claims she is the love of his life, and his greed is likewise undisguised this phrase shows that it is almost like a pastime to him, a way to fill the hours. Much like he does with hunting, he thinks of it as a game, which robs it of its emotional weight. This idea reveals not only the hypocrisy of the upper class, but also the way they cling to certain rituals even when those rituals contradict their professed sentiments. Thwankum and Square: Both these characters teach and live in Allworthy’s estate for the economic advantages.

Beowulf: Grendel Beowulf: Grendel John Gardner introduces the reader of Grendel to an intimate side of Unferth unseen in the epic poem Beowulf. In Grendel we behold what a pathetic, sniveling wimp Unferth has become. In Beowulf all that we see is a jealous bastard. Why did Gardner make the character of Unferth so different from the original depiction? He didn't. The only change in Unferth from Beowulf to Grendel is his realistic characterization in Grendel. After the drunken Danes give Beowulf his warm welcome, Unferth unleashes his anger in an attack on Beowulf. This petty proclamation which points out Beowulf's not- so triumphant swimming contest with Brecca, shows the reader (or listener) that Unferth is nothing more than a spineless bastard. In Grendel we find that Unferth's bitterness is well founded. John Gardner shows Unferth as the most pathetic man to ever call himself a hero. Unferth is degraded once in the apple battle (he was beat by flying fruit for god's sake!!!) and then again in the cave. In the cave Unferth begs Grendel to take his life but Grendel gives him fate worse than death. Grendel leaves him alive and impotent. Unferth knows that he cannot kill Grendel yet he cannot be a martyr to Herot either. All during the first year of Grendel's siege, the smell of apples fresh in the air, Unferth tries to be the Grendel's martyr. Oh the heroic Unferth who died trying to save the people of Herot. Unfortunately he never got to die, not even dressed up as a goat, a pig or an elderly women. This continuing life of impotence lead Unferth to an immense sense of bitterness. Poor Unferth to be at a beast's mercy for twelve years only to have Beowulf disembowel Grendel in one night. On the beach as Beowulf is about detach mama's head from her body, Unferth gives Beowulf his sword in a touching moment of peace between Beowulf and Unferth. Well that is not quite right. This touching moment is Unferth's last attempt at contributing to his beloved Herot. If he can't kill the beast at least his sword can. Unferth is reaching for martyrdom. Unferth never redeems himself as a hero no matter how unselfish or heroic he was as he handed over his beloved sword. Unferth would never be a hero again. His one chance of "inner heroism" was gone when Grendel refused take his life in the cave. Unferth is the same man in both novels, there is no doubt about that. The strands of similarity are to thick to ignore. He is dying to be a martyr in both Grendel and Beowulf. The only difference between Grendel's Unferth and Beowulf's Unferth is the detail and depth to which his character is taken. John Gardner brought a relatively small character from Beowulf , and made him the second most defined character in Grendel.

The Last Hurrah essays The Last Hurrah is a narrative within a narrative about Frank Skeffington, an old Irish-American political boss. He begins his fifth and most likely last campaign for mayor of a New England city. It shows the good and evil inherent in politics and all the things that go into an election. A man of the people, Skeffington attends funerals, hands out money, and kisses babies. Skeffington invites his journalist nephew, Adam Caulfield, to see the campaign up close. Skeffington narrates the Skeffington family history to Caufield. Caufield narrates Skeffingtons political history. Caufield is a columnist for a long-standing anti-Skeffington newspaper. Caufield married into an anti-Skeffington family. Skeffington is a fighter from the cradle, with lots of enemies, yet as he approaches the end of his political career and his life, he finally comes to peace with the world. Skeffingtons Irish immigrant mother worked as a maid for the wealthy Boston Force family who fired her for stealing food. Skeffington is a champion of the poor and downtrodden, especially if they happen to be Irish. He is not above coercion if it will bring comfort to his constituents. Caufield accompanies Skeffington to a wake and observes the dual nature of the politician by shamelessly working the crowd for support and later pressuring the greedy undertaker into reducing the exorbitant funeral costs. Skeffingtons enemies nominate a handsome, oafish young Irishman to run against him. The mayors team seems confident they can defeat him easily, but Skeffington is not so sure. Skeffingtons battles uphill to stay in office against political machinery that preys on ethnic hatred and old-time money. His real work is getting the cooperation of the old establishment who keep him as an outsider by any means that they can. His policies bring him hostility from the citys WASP faction and the clergy ...
